1886: Crofters' Holdings Act enacted. Crofters' Commission formed, including the Scottish Land Court to administer Crofters' Holdings Act.
1886: Extraction of diatomite, a chalky filtrate and filler used in manufacturing, begins at Loch Cuithir, Trotternish.
1886: Talisker Distillery output 40,000 gallons.
1887: Herz discovers radio waves.
1888: Dunlop develops pneumatic tyre.
1888: Somerled MacDonald dies aged 25.
1890: Multi-core telegraph cable laid between mainland and Skye.
1891: H. T. Munro completes his list of Scottish mountain peaks over 3000ft.
1891: Skye's population 16,000, of whom 7,000 spoke only Gaelic.
1891: During the Spring Captain MacDonald of Waternish House kills six adult peregrine falcons and displaces two eaglets.
1893: Mr MacFarlane, minister of Raasay, leaves the Free Church of Scotland, the Wee Frees.

1899: A Gurkha named Harkabir Tharpa scales Glamaig (2537ft) in a record 37 minutes..
